JONAH 3 : 3 & 8
GOD relented from the disaster that HE had said HE
would bring upon Nineveh but it displeased Jonah!
Jonah cried and prayed ‘O LORD please take my life from me’.
And he declared ‘it is better to die than to live! ‘
Again, when the plant, which gave shade to him in his
shelter, got damaged and withered because of a worm,
Jonah said in his misery ‘it is better to die than to live!’.
What a prayer!
We can very easily identify ourselves with Jonah;
We can even justify these kind of prayers!
But there is a problem;
Just few days back, Jonah prayed a diametrically
opposite kind of prayer from the fish’s belly! (chapter 2).
In his desperate situation, he cried unto the LORD to save
him from death!
His near death experience, times of darkness, three days of
mental and physical agony and hopeless state resulted in his repentance; His desire to leave darkness and to see light forced him to pray for deliverance!
GOD answered that prayer!
Jonah got the second chance!
Just few days; Jonah started praying against, his own life, the answer given by GOD!
He didn’t remember the way he got the blessing and life again!
His original prayer and his painful cry were gone out of his mind
and he murmured, complained and wished to die!.
The vows he made were all gone with the wind!
See the irony!
He failed, repented, got the grace and the second chance but
he was not able to accept GOD’s grace flowing towards repenting Nineveh!
How many of us are having this kind of crooked mind which
forgets the deliverance we got from a hopeless situation?
How many of us are having the habit of hurting and hating the
GOD given blessings in our life?
How many of us, because of little discomfort, do not even remember the gracious deliverance we received from the haunted nights and the hunted days of our life?
Where are our vows, decisions and commitments?
Gone with the wind?
Repent, even for your foolish prayers!
Again and again remember your days of deliverance and
thank HIM, failing which our hearts get hardened and we
may also end up like Jonah murmuring against GOD given
BLESS THE LORD, O MY SOUL; AND FORGET NOT
ALL HIS BENEFITS; ( PSALM 103 : 2 ).
GIVE UNTO THE LORD THE GLORY DUE TO HIS NAME;
WORSHIP THE LORD IN THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS.
( PSALM 29 : 2 )
DEUTERONOMY 1: 31 (CARRIES)
….. YOU SAW HOW THE LORD CARRIED YOU,
AS A MAN CARRIES HIS SON, IN ALL THE WAY
YOU WENT UNTIL YOU CAME TO THIS PLACE.
DEUTERONOMY 8 : 5 (CHASTENS)
……. SO YOU SHOULD KNOW IN YOUR HEART
THAT AS A MAN CHASTENS HIS SON, SO THE
LORD YOUR GOD CHASTENS YOU.
PSALM 103 : 13 (PITIES)
…AS A FATHER PITIES HIS CHILDREN, SO THE
LORD PITIES THOSE WHO FEAR HIM.
MALACHI 1 : 6
A SON HONORS HIS FATHER,
AND A SERVANT HIS MASTER.
IF THEN I AM THE FATHER,
WHERE IS MY HONOR?
AND IF I AM A MASTER,
WHERE IS MY REVERENCE?
LUKE 15 : 20
.. AND HE AROSE AND CAME TO HIS FATHER.
BUT WHEN HE WAS STILL A GREAT WAY OFF,
HIS FATHER SAW HIM AND HAD COMPASSION
AND RAN AND FELL ON HIS NECK AND KISSED
HE sent a man before them -Joseph- who was sold as a slave.
GOD sent Joseph to Egypt before other Israelites!
Wait a minute!
When did that happen?
Where is it in the Book of Genesis?
GOD sent Joseph?
Was it not Jacob who sent Joseph to Shechem?
-Is obedience to parents also GOD’s way of leading a person?
Was it not some unknown man who informed Joseph about his
brothers’ plan to go to Dothan thus by helping Joseph to go to
-Does GOD guide us through a stranger’s word also?
Was it not Joseph’s brothers who sold him to the Midianite
– Are a GOD-centered person’s enemies also controlled by
GOD in such a way that even their secret plans will help that
person to move only in the GOD- assigned direction?
Was it not the Midianite traders who sent Joseph as a slave to
– Is having no rights for a time period also a proof that one is
travelling in the GOD-designed Royal Road?
Was it not the Potiphar’s wife who was instrumental in sending
Joseph to the prison ?
-Do injustice and silent nights also confirm that our journey is
in the right direction?
Was it not the king of Egypt who sent two of his servants to the
– Does the seemingly accidental meetings in a disciple’s life is
also the significant road signs planted by GOD?
Was it not the forgetfulness of the person who received favor
from Joseph the reason for his extended days of dark nights?
– Does the ‘last hope’ on a person becoming the ‘lost hope’
indicate that our times are in HIS hands?
Was it not the king of Egypt who sent and released Joseph?
– Is it true that the world will conspire to honor a life surrendered
to GOD in the right time?
GOD sent Joseph to Egypt!
But it took thirteen years to reach Egypt from Canaan!
Because when GOD deals with a person, HE will not just sent him
in the Royal Road but equips him also for his future assignment!
And above all, he didn’t just send Joseph!
But HE went with Joseph! (GENESIS 39 : 2 & 21)
Yes, HIS presence will be with us, whether we acknowledge or not,
whenever we travel in HIS Royal Road!
Weeping? Lost hope? No one to understand?
Almost gave up?; Betrayal after betrayal?
Rejection after rejection?
No one remembers?
Forget your own name in the valley of shadow of death?
Counting stars with open eyes and counting sheep with closed eyes?
Feeling as if the whole world is against you?
Hey! Wipe your tears! Don’t worry!
You are a Joseph for this generation!
Believe me, you are on the Royal Road!
GOD only sent you in the Road!
Not just sends you but HE also comes with you!
Look up and get up!
Again surrender your life to HIM!
And live one day at a time by trusting HIM!
Soon you will receive your position and promotion!
UNTIL THE TIME THAT HIS WORD CAME TO PASS, THE
WORD OF THE LORD TESTED HIM (PSALM 105 : 17)
2 SAMUEL 9
Son of Jonathan; grandson of King Saul.
Lame in his feet; depending on his servant Ziba.
Living somewhere outside Jerusalem (verse 4)
Frustrated so much about his life that he considered
himself a dead dog! (verse 8)
But he didn’t know about one thing, the covenant;
The covenant between David and Jonathan, his father!
(1 Samuel 20 : 12 – 17)
After many years, the invitation came to Mephisobeth!
A favor shown to him because of the covenant!
What was the favor?
One time gift? Monthly allowance? temporary permit?
No! He was given the privilege of eating bread at the
table of King David! (verse 7)
Not for one or two days but always! (verse 10)
Not like a guest but like one of the King’s sons! (verse 11).
Think about this!
A privilege given to a person who considered himself a
dead dog; a person not having the right or might, even to
enter the KIng’s palace, got the opportunity of being in the
presence of the king and eating at the king’s table at least
three times a day throughout his life!
No strings attached!. No ifs and buts!
Pure favor! Power of the covenant!
Mephiboseth accepted the favor and immediately changed
his residence from some remote village to the city of King
David, Jerusalem, so that he could utilize the favor! (verse 13).
There is another covenant, covenant of blood, made two
thousand years ago at Calvary!
This covenant gave us the right to enter the KING’s presence
and eat at HIS table!
Not like a servant but as the children of the KING OF KINGS!
Not for one or two days but always!
Favor shown to a person who was dead in his sins!
Grace even to the dead dogs like us!
David’s presence was not assured at his table always,
but Our LORD’s presence is assured at HIS table always!
You are accepted in the beloved, not because of your merit,
because of the covenant of blood made by our KING,LORD
and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST!
Have we accepted that acceptance properly?
Have we made the necessary changes in our life and lifestyle
so that we can enjoy the given privilege to enter HIS presence?
Have we thanked HIM enough for the grace bestowed upon us?
Remember, Mephiboseth came and dwelt in Jerusalem so
that to receive and honor the favor of king!
What about us?
HE PREPARES A TABLE BEFORE ME IN THE
PRESENCE OF MY ENEMIES; …… ….. …….
AND I WILL DWELL IN THE HOUSE OF THE
LORD FOREVER. ( PSALM 23 : 5 & 6 )
Have you noticed?
In Luke 15 : 6, the man who found his lost sheep invited his
friends and neighbors to rejoice with him;
In Luke 15 : 9, the woman who found the lost coin invited her
friends and neighbors to rejoice with her;
But in Luke 15 : 23, when the younger son came back,
the father didn’t invite his friends or neighbors but only his
servants to rejoice with him!
Is it because of the Father’s nature to cover and not to
advertise about HIS children’s failures?
In fact, when the younger son used the word ‘sin’ in his
confession to his father in front of his servants, the father
quickly changed the subject and instructed the servants to
concentrate on the feast!
Is he not remembering anything of the repentant child’s past?
Again, when the elder son tried his best to remind his father
about the past life of his brother with all the details, the father
quickly changed the subject by explaining the elder one’s
privileges and not the younger one’s past?
Is he not allowing even the elder one to speak about the forgiven
sins of his own brother?
Strange but true!
For the father, ‘My son was dead and is alive again!’ is the only
way to express the things happened in his family; Whenever
repentance restores relationship, the father ignores the past
and influences his elder son and his servants also to ignore the
past of his younger son.
It is a family problem, why friends and neighbors?
If you repented and confessed your sins once, your father won’t remember them anymore!
Sometimes, like the younger son, your own mind may deceive
you to think, worry, feel guilty and speak about the confessed sin
again and again!.
If you are feeling guilty about the confessed and forgiven sin,
that is an insult to our Father and His Word!
Don’t try to explain your sin in detail under the cover of ‘ sharing
your testimony’; rather speak about HIS grace in detail!
Who can understand the depth of HIS grace?
Sometimes, may be most of the times, the elders may try to belittle
you by listing out the details even after your repentance!
Ignore them!. Stay close to your Father!
What your Father think and say about you only matters!
HE says that you are alive!
Why live like a corpse?
Let the power of resurrection fills you with the everlasting joy, hope
Repented? Our Father asked us to rejoice!
Let us rejoice!
THE LORD YOUR GOD IN YOUR MIDST,
THE MIGHTY ONE, WILL SAVE;
HE WILL REJOICE OVER YOU WITH GLADNESS,
HE WILL QUIET YOU IN HIS LOVE,
HE WILL REJOICE OVER YOU WITH SINGING.
( HABAKKUK 3 : 17 )
Three parables to illustrate repentance;
But have you noticed a subtle variation in the contents?
ONE: Luke 15 : 4 – 7. Lost sheep.
One in hundred;
How it got lost? – It does not matter!
Responsibility of searching lies with the owner;
He goes after it until he finds it.
Response of the sheep: It can not come back on its own
but can respond to the searching voice of the master!
Active response to the owner’s initiative!
TWO: Luke 15 : 8 – 10. Lost coin.
One in ten;
How it got lost? – It does not matter !
Responsibility of searching lies with the owner;
She seeks diligently until she finds it.
Response of the coin: It can not come back on its own
and it can not help, the owner in searching!.
Passive response to the owner’s initiative!
THREE: Luke 15 : 11 – 24.
One in two:
How he got lost? – Premeditated, willful rebellion!
Responsibility of searching becomes responsibility
of accepting provided the failed son takes the first
step of remembering the Father’s attributes and
returning back! Till that happens Father patiently waiting!
Response of the son: Accepting the unconditional acceptance!
Active response of the Father to the son’s initiative!
Dear friend, we all fail, we all fall; but we only know what
kind of failure we met;
In some cases, like the sheep, we have to wait for HIS voice
In some other cases, like the coin, we can not move on our
own and we have to wait for HIS searching light and seeking
But in most of the cases, like the son, we have to remember
HIS love for us and HIS attributes and worth, and repent!
May GOD give you the discernment to know your state and
to respond in the right way in the right time!
I SAY TO YOU, THERE IS JOY IN THE
PRESENCE OF THE ANGELS OF GOD
OVER ONE SINNER WHO REPENTS.
( LUKE 15 : 10 )
